Up until 2019, I tutored from home or visited a few students’ homes. That year, we decided to relocate closer to my mother-in-law, who resided in Simei. I needed to find a new “home” for work. My pupils were mostly from Katong; therefore, it was only logical that I get a space in that area.

In May 2019, I was fortunate to rent a modest room in Roxy Square for less than the market rental rate per month, which was an excellent deal considering the location. I had also looked in Katong Plaza, but it was in the midst of their enbloc bid to sell.

For about 8 months, everything went well in Roxy Square. Unfortunately, my landlord intended to vacate the property in March 2020. I was notified in December/January 2020 that I needed to either take over the lease or move out by March 2021.

Taking over the lease would necessitate costly modifications. There was also the challenge of seepage issues existing in the unit to deal with, making it unfeasible to proceed. As a result, I began looking for another office space in the region. I was really upset. (Where would I find another affordable space in the area?)

As I began my quest, I came across several lovely and not-so-lovely settings. Essentially, I was searching for a room. However, nothing was available. I then headed back to Katong Plaza. It was still there, having failed in its enbloc attempt.

And that’s it! The rest is history 😂😃🤩. With the help of family and friends, I signed the lease to #02-36 Katong Plaza on February 23, 2020.

My kids refer to it as the “ghost building” because it is easily missed. 🤣 Blink, and you’ll miss it! Nonetheless, it’s been my second home. COVID circuit breakers, online classes, workshops, storytelling, collaborations with friends… Katong Plaza has provided me with more than I could have imagined. After five years in one place, it seems like home 🥰. It feels like you’ve fulfilled your MOP, Minimum Occupation Period. I am eternally grateful. ⚘️
