Shalni

Shalni Doshi is the founder and principal teacher at Simply English, where she has been nurturing students’ language skills for the past 17 years.

An “accidental” teacher, Shalni began her education career as a freelance Speech and Drama, Public Speaking, and Study Skills instructor in MOE primary and secondary schools. When a friend asked her to tutor her child, Shalni discovered her true calling—and she has never looked back since.

Shalni holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the University of Nottingham and a Bachelor’s degree from NUS, along with Trinity College Grade 6 qualifications in Speech and Drama. She is also a Storyteller, participating in local Storytelling Festivals annually since 2015. Beyond delivering curriculum content, Shalni is passionate about exposing her students to diverse forms of literature—both fiction and non-fiction—to cultivate a genuine love for the English language.

A mother of two boys, Shalni values balance in life. In her free time, she enjoys staying home with family, volunteering at food kitchens and her sons’ schools, cooking, and reading. She believes that variety is the spice of life and actively engages in activities that help her connect meaningfully with both children and adults.

To Shalni, teaching is a collaborative journey. It is a two-way street where teachers learn as much from their students as they teach. She views herself as a guide, mentor, and friend—someone who walks alongside her students to help them reach their goals and achieve their aspirations. Having been fortunate to have teachers who nurtured her own growth, Shalni is now paying it forward by doing the same for the next generation.
